Stacked Round Bale Silage Demonstration

Jeff Braidek

Government of Saskatchewan

April 2013 - March 2014

Audience(s): Cow-Calf Backgrounder Feedlot   Project Type(s): Demonstration

Forage and cattle feed are the highest cost on a cattle farm or ranch. In the Parkland region, putting greenfeed up dry and in a timely manner so that spoilage does not occur after baling can be a challenge in some years. In those years, producers look to alternatives such as wrapping bales in plastic to preserve feed as silage. However, many producers do not have access to a bale wrapper.

The project showed that stacked and covered round bale silage is a viable option for storing large, round silage bales.
