Reclamation of Saline Soil Using Perennial Forages

The beef industry has the ability to convert forages grown on marginal lands that are to steep, rocky or salty into high quality protien. Stewardship of these marginal lands are key to long term productivity.

Demonstrate perennial forage establishment under saline soils using various alfalfa and grasses (ten treatments) between 2011 and 2014. Soil salinity was mapped and monitored to determine if there was an improvement. In the first year of establishment alfalfa species were poor colonizers, AC Saltlander, tall wheatgrass, and creeping foxtail had the best establishment. There were issues with varietion in soil salinity. By 2014, forage biomass 2014 for Tall wheatgrass, Saline Master, Tall fescue, AC Saltlander and NewHy were relatively consistent. Alfalfa produced most biomass in non-saline areas. However, winterkill became a problem with time and soil salinity was not reduced.
